-
[Text] Prior to his departure from Ankara to participate in
- the Rio Earth Summit, Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel made a
- statement at the airport pointing out that global cooperation
- is imperative in the fields of education, health, and
- environment. Noting that the world's population is expected to
- reach 10 billion people in the coming 35 to 40 years, Demirel
- said: The high birth rate is taking its toll on our earth by
- destroying its resources. This trend is expected to increase.
- This has made the restructuring of our earth more difficult and
- has made it necessary to let the world rest and restore its
- resources.
-

-
Demirel stressed that the protection of the environment has
- become as essential as food, clothing, heating, and medicine.
-

-
Demirel continued:
-

-
[Begin recording] Some of our cities are suffering air
- pollution in the winter. No one, therefore, should neglect the
- protection of the environment. Some 30 cities are now
- uninhabitable because of air pollution. Our bays are polluted.
- You can see it in the Izmit and Izmir bays. Some of our rivers
- are polluted and have become black. Large parts of our forests
- have been destroyed. Erosion is costing Turkey a loss of land
- as large as Cyprus every year. Our large cities are so full of
- problems that it is impossible to live in them. The people of
- all countries must consider the problems of the environment.
- They constitute a global problem that is also our problem. [end
- recording]
-

-
Demirel explained that the Earth Summit in Rio will pass
- important resolutions regarding environmental pollution and
- that beneficial results will be obtained if those resolutions
- are implemented.
